Manipur has recorded its first dengue-related death of the year in Imphal West this September, as the state battles a growing dengue outbreak. The most affected area is Thangmeiband in Imphal West district, state government data said.
Dengue cases surged from 148 in August to 230 by mid-September, bringing the total number of cases since January 2024 to over 450. Imphal West leads with 265 cases, followed by Imphal East with 120 cases. Other districts like Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, and Jiribam have reported no cases so far, the government data said.
Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, speaking on the sidelines of the International Week of the Deaf People 2024 celebrations in Imphal today called for urgent public support to help health workers control the outbreak.
He emphasized that the efforts of health officials are being hampered by a lack of community cooperation. The Minister also expressed deep concern over the recent dengue death and urged people to take preventive measures to assist in managing the situation.
In 2023, Manipur reported a total of 2,458 dengue cases.
