Names of three sitting BJP MLAs were missing from the candidate list for Manipur polls that was announced by BJP on January 30. This includes Y Irabot of Wangkhei assembly constituency. In his place BJP has decided to field Okram Henry.

Apart from this Kakching MLA M. Rameshwor has been denied a ticket where Y Surachandra will be contesting the elections. Meanwhile, Moirang MLA P. Saratchandra has been denied a ticket and M Prithviraj will be contesting the elections in his stead this time.

As per reports Y Irabot has resiged from the party and is likely to fight from the NPP.
Among the replacements for the sitting MLAs O. Henry is the nephew of former Chief Minister and Congress leader O Ibobi Singh. O. Henry had joined the BJP in 2020 June.

M. Prithviraj who will fight for Moirang is a new entrant to the BJP. In the 2017 election, he fought on a Congress ticket and lost.

The journey of Y. Surchandra Singh to a BJP ticket is fascinating. He fought the 2017 elections and won. M Rameshwor who fought the same election on BJP ticket had come second. Later Rameshwor filed a complaint to ECI and a PIL charging Y Surchandra for not disclosing his wife’s financial status in his election affidavit. Subsequently, Y Surchandra was disqualified and declared M Rameshwor (who stood second) as MLA of Kakching assembly constituency
