Manipur observed the historic Nupi Lan Day on Wednesday.
Nupi Lan, which means women’s war in Manipuri- was a significant movement in the history of the state.
The women in Manipur have always enjoyed a special status in society as they played a significant role in shaping the history of Manipur.
The programme was marked with offering wreaths and prayers in the morning which was organised by the state government to commemorate the historic women’s war in Manipur that took place in 1904 and again in 1939 against the British hegemony and artificial famine during colonial rule.
Addressing the gathering, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said it was only when the BJP came to power, a first-tract court exclusively for women was initiated for the first time to intervene any crimes against women.
Highlighting various roles taken up the Manipur women, he asked every woman to come forward and join politics to take part in state legislation.
