Manipur: Drugs worth over Rs 60,000 cr seized, 2,461 arrested, 3,066 cases registered since 2022

"The issue of drugs was challenging and required more intensive actions. Therefore, the government started the war on drugs in 2022," said CM N Biren Singh.

Drugs worth over Rs 60,000 crore were seized, destroyed 20,000 hectares of poppy plantations, 2,461 people have been arrested, and 3,066 cases have been registered in Manipur since 2022 when the N Biren Singh-led BJP government started its war on drugs to make the state drug-free and help eradicate drug abuse and trafficking.

Sharing a video on X, Chief Minister N Biren Singh showcased what exactly led the state government to launch the war on drugs campaign.

In the video highlighting the successful journey on tackling issues related to drugs, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that drugs like cocaine, opium, cannabis, and Yaba tablets have disastrous effects on the environment that range from land sinking to deforestation. 

He said that poppy cultivation poses a potential threat to the environment and that harvesting illegal crops on the mountain.

“The issue of drugs was challenging and required more intensive actions. Therefore, the government started the war on drugs in 2022,” said CM N Biren Singh.

The Chief Minister said, “Manipur’s geographical proximity to the Golden Triangle made it a prime transit route for drug trafficking. It threatens to transform the state into a major poppy production and trafficking hub. Poppy cultivation causes substantial harm to the environment. The state government has destroyed poppy cultivation of 3420.371 acres and provided the poppy planters with alternative crops and equipment.”

CM N Biren Singh said that during the period of March 2022 to March 2023, the campaign yielded impressive results and with more public support, the war on drugs became interesting and more effective.
