Snubbed for the first time, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh today extended a second invitation for talks to the Manipur University Teachers Association in the wake of the ongoing crisis at the varsity.
The development seems to have come in the wake of the visit of a team of editors and senior reporters to the campus to meet the representatives of the MUTA.
Earlier, the MUTA had rejected the CM’s offer for talks last week setting a few pre-conditions which include the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers of the university and removal of security forces from the campus.
As per latest reports a delegation of the MUTA including the president of the association I Tomba have already arrived for the talks with the chief minister.
Significantly, the MUTA members decided to attend the talks today despite the suspension of several of the association members as per orders passed by university registrar Shyamkesho Singh.
Among those suspended are MUTA members Nimai Singh and Debananda Singh. Prof Amar Yumnam of the department of economics has also been placed under suspension.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day a team of senior editors and local journalists from Imphal visited the Manipur University campus to hold talks with members of the Manipur University Teachers Association. The outcome of the talks however was not made known.
On the other hand, admissions for the new academic session of the Manipur University began today with students gathering at the university premises to fill forms for various courses.
The last date for submission of fresh forms was scheduled for today, but considering the rush of students and the current situation of the campus, the last date has been extended to October 8.
Meanwhile, the indefinite hunger by female hostellers of Manipur University entered its 7th day today. At least 20 girls have been admitted to the hospital in the past 6 days as health conditions continue to deteriorate.
The girl students have been protesting against the mid-night raid by the Manipur Police commandos in the University campus on the intervening night of September 20 and 21 and are in no mood to retreat unless the arrested students and teachers are released.
Meanwhile, students of the earth science also staged a protest in the university campus today demanding unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers.
