Assam: Magisterial enquiry ordered into boat capsize incident in Dibang River

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident of boat capsize in Dibang River in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on August 30, 2023.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Manas Jyoti Nath has been asked to conduct the enquiry and submit his report within 10 days.

As many as 32 passengers had a narrow escape when the boat capsized near the Amarpur Dibang Ghat in Sadiya.

The boat carrying 32 passengers was on its way from the Amarpur Ghat towards Chapakhuwa when it got caught in the strong-current of the river and capsized.

Even as the boat capsized, all the passengers were successfully rescued by the locals, but several vehicles including two four-wheelers and multiple two-wheelers got submerged in the river because of the incident.

On May 3 too, a boat with 25 passengers capsized in Dibang River.

The incident took place when the boat was about to reach the river bank in Amarpur after starting its journey from Chapakhowa.

Locals heard the passengers’ cry for help and jumped into the river and saved them.
