The Madras High Court has finally granted burial of late DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s mortal remains at Chennai’s Marina Beach.
The DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi will have a burial site at Chennai’s Marina Beach, ending an ugly political row as thousands mourned the death of the 5 time state Chief Minister.
The verdict prompted emotional scenes among family members who are gathered near Karunanidhi’s Tricolour-draped body.
Earlier, the ruling AIADMK had denied permission for Kalaignar’s memorial at the Marina Beach.
Thereby, the Madras High Court sat around midnight at the home of acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh to hear DMK’s petition after the AIADMK, its lifelong rival, refused its request saying he was not a sitting Chief Minister. However, the court granted permission for his burial in Marina Beach.
The DMK supremo’s funeral will be held with full state honours. The Ministry of Home Affairs said that the Indian national flag would fly half mast during this period and all government-related functions would be suspended.
Karunanidhi breathed his last at 6.10 pm on Tuesday after an 11-day battle with his deteriorating health in Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital. According to a Kauvery hospital release, the cause of Karunanidhi’s death has been said to be multiple organ failure.
A pall of gloom descended on the Gopalapuram residence of Karunanidhi. DMK workers were seen breaking down after Kauvery Hospital released a statement that the DMK chief was no more.
Karunanidhi was the chief minsiter of Tamil Nadu for as many as 5 times and was a 13-time MLA. Arguably the tallest name in South Inidan politics, Karunanidhi was widely respected in the political circles.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects to former Chief Minister Karunanidhi at Chennai’s Rajaji Hall. PM Modi laid a wreath and folded his hands while paying tribute.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and daughter of late M Karunanidhi Kanimozhi as she led him to the area where the mortal remains of late leader are kept.
