Lone Congress legislator from Garo Hills Saleng Sangma said that it is a big a challenge but ultimately it is the people who will choose their MP
Lone Congress legislator from Garo Hills in Meghalaya, Saleng Sangma who is contesting for the Tura parliamentary seat, has downplayed claims by the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) leaders who said that the contest will be an uphill task, for the Congress candidate.
Speaking to Northeaast Live, Sangma said that it is a big a challenge but ultimately it is the people who will choose their MP.
He said, “Easy or not, nobody can predict as it is the people who will decide.”
He said that there have been ruling governments for more than so many decades. It is therefore time for people to consider if they still give a chance to government in power or whether they should vote for a new government.
While acknowledging that PA Sangma’s legacy has been ruling the Garo Hills in the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress legislator said that in a democracy, whenever there is any political family dominance, the very spirit of democracy is destroyed.
He said that if the legacy is good for the people, let them choose it but if it is doing injustice to them, then let them change it.
Notably, the Congress is fielding Gambegre legislator and opposition chief whip Saleng A Sangma against NPP’s Agatha K Sangma from Tura seat.
NPP’s Agatha Sangma will re-contest for the Tura seat while cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh will contest for the Shillong seat.
The opposition Voice of People’s Party (VPP) has announced general secretary Ricky AJ Syngkon’s name for Shillong seat.
The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) comprising the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) have fielded former Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) president Robertjune Kharjahrin for Shillong seat.
TMC, Congress and BJP are yet to announce the names of its candidates for the two seats.
