Minister and 4 times MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh would contest from Shillong Parliamentary constituency and sitting LS MP from Tura, Agatha K Sangma would fight from Tura for another term
The National People’s Party (NPP) on Friday announced the names of its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The party headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya announced the name of 4-time MLA and current health minister of the state Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh as its candidate for the prestigious Shillong seat and sitting Lok Sabha MP from Tura, Agatha K Sangma for another term as MP from Tura.
“There were not less than 5-6 aspirants not only from Shillong parliamentary constituency but also from Tura. Ultimately the state election committee has duly examined and proper consultation has also been made not only upto the district level but upto to the polling booth level. So ultimately the committee has decided to recommend these two names to the high command. And the high command has approved these two names,” NPP’s Meghalaya president Prestone Tynsong told reporters announcing the names.
Asked why two female candidates have been nominated, Tynsong who is also the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya said, “In elections it does not matter whether you put up a male or a female, our priority is winnability. So for us we need a candidate who has the best possibility to win. Based on that we decided to field these two candidates”.
Stating that NPP is set to win both the seats, Tynsong said, “If you look at the vote percentage of 2023, NPP secured the highest vote share. Second was UDP and third was Congress. We are still the highest in the Shillong parliamentary constituency, let alone the vote share in Tura. We will work hard, we will work wholeheartedly. We have instructed the newly recruited office bearers to reach out to the village level not just to district and polling booth level.”
Several other names were doing the rounds including those of former BJP leader and Mawsynram MLA and now NPP politician HM Shangpliang. Reports also suggested that the Meghalaya TMC Vice President and former Umroi legislator George B Lyngdoh would resign from TMC and contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on NPP ticket from Shillong.
