Party president Ernest Mawrie said, "Anyone contesting from BJP should know the party's ideology

Even as there seem to a tussle among Meghalaya BJP leaders Sanbor Shullai and AL Hek (also a minister in the Conrad Sangma Cabinet) over who should be the party’s candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, former Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie yesterday claimed that the party workers want the ticket to be given to those who are from the party and know its ideology.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Ernest Mawrie said, “Anyone contesting from BJP should know the party’s ideology. Which is why, party workers want candidates from the BJP to be members of the party.”

It may be mentioned that there are at least three aspirants from the party for the Shillong seat – Cabinet Minister and six time BJP legislator from Pynthorumkhrah, AL Hek, fresher Dr Fenelia Lyngdoh Nonglait and Ernest Mawrie himself.

Apart from Shillong, there are multiple candidates who have sought BJP ticket to contest from Tura. One of the front runner is Bernard Marak, Vice President of Meghalaya BJP and a prominent leader from Tura.

Earlier last month, BJP legislator from South Shillong Sanbor Shullai has urged the state BJP leadership to nominate Dr Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait as candidate from the Shillong parliamentary constituency.

Meanwhile the Trinamool Congress has fielded former minister Zenith Sangma as its candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
