A Kerala college student was arrested for allegedly burning her roommate’s hand with a hot iron box and sprinkling chili powder on her wounds.
Police said the accused, Lohitha, a final year student of the College of Agriculture at Vellayani in Thiruvananthapuram, and her roommate hailed from Andhra Pradesh.
Lohitha burnt her roommate’s hand after heating an iron box and a pan. She then sprinkled chili powder on her roommate’s wounds and burnt her hand again, the police said.
Police said, according to other hostel residents, the two students were facing some problems among themselves. They had been living in the same room for the last four years.
According to the police complaint, the victim, Deepika, went back to Andhra Pradesh and sought treatment when her family and friends got to know of the torture. She then went back to college and filed a complaint with the authorities, after which, the college management informed the police. Thereafter, Thiruvallam Police conducted an inquiry and registered a case.
Agriculture Minister P Prasad ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Students Federation of India (SFI) took out a protest march against the college. The college has also suspended the duo’s other roommate for not disclosing the incident to authorities.
