Karimganj Eviction Drive: Illegals pelt stones at police, authorities

A hundred houses were bulldozed yesterday as part of the eviction drive with about 700 illegal families being evicted.

Chaotic scenes prevailed in the Karimganj distrct of Assam on Saturday where a major eviction drive is underway.

Stone pelting and chaotic scenes were witnessed at the Isabil Tea Estate where authorities carried out a major eviction.

The drive which began yesterday, saw chaotic scenes were many of the illegal settlers resisted the stern action by the authorities.

Police were also forced to fire rubber bullets at the unruly mob and baton charged to disperse them.

Yesterday, the eviction drive was carried out in Patiyala and would continue for today and the next few days as well in phases.

Around a hundred houses were bulldozed yesterday as part of the eviction drive with about 700 illegal families being evicted.

The eviction drive was carried out under the supervision of DIG South Assam region Kangkan Jyoti Saiki and Karimganj DC Mridul Yadav.

The drive was conducted after management and worker union of the Isable Tea Estate complained to the authorities that about 1200 bighas of land within the tea garden area have been illegally occupied.
