JICA to Construct 5 Major Road Projects Worth Rs 1440 Cr in Sikkim to Boost Connectivity

A team of JICA is conducting site visits to assess the project areas.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to construct as many as 5 major road projects in Sikkim to boost connectivity and to improve road standards, said Hari Shankar Sharma, the Principal Chief Engineer of the Roads and Bridges Department.

The total estimated cost for these infrastructure improvements is approximately Rs 1440 crore.

The proposed projects to be implemented by the JICA includes-

  1. Widening and upgradation of the road from Singtam-Chew-rebotey-Pachey-khani-Rangpo at the cost of Rs 390.56 crore

2.Widening, upgradation, and carpeting of the road from Balguney to Soreng via Gelling and Chakung at the cost of Rs222.10 crore

3.Widening, upgradation, and carpeting of the road along Phamtam-Mangnam-Pokhari-Dhupidara-Labdang-Kongri-Tashiding at a cost of Rs 480 crore

4.Widening, upgradation, and carpeting of the road along Pangthang-Tintek-Dikchu at a cost of ₹240 crore

And, construction of a 2-lane bridge at Jalipool along the Ranipool-Pakyong road, with upgradation work on the road from Jalipool to Ranipool at a cost of Rs 28.56 crores.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Hari Shankar Sharma said, “The JICA team is in Sikkim. They met Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang in Gangtok on September 5 to discuss the roadmap for these projects. Currently, the team is conducting site visits to assess the project areas.”
