The government of Meghalaya is most likely to take up the long-pending inter-state border issue with Assam after the 2021 Assam General elections.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated, while it is impossible to discuss the issue with Assam before the elections, the state will definitely take up the long-pending interstate border issue with the new Assam government.

The development comes after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement asking all Northeastern states to resolve their respective interstate boundary issue amicably with their counterparts.

“We welcome the statement made by the Honourable Union Minister and maybe in the month of April or May general elections in Assam is going to end. So, after the elections are over and after the new government is formed in Assam we will discuss the matter,” said the Deputy Chief Minister.

Terming Shah’s statement as ‘welcoming and encouraging’, Prestone was all praises for the Union Home Minister for bringing up the issue.

He added the statement made by Amit Shah shows the Centre’s concern on the ongoing dispute and difference between the Northeast states.

“A number of northeastern states do have the interstate boundary issue and Meghalaya is one of them. This is the first time that a Union Home Minister has shown concern regarding the inter-state boundary dispute. Through the statement, he has appealed the respective state governments to sit down in a table and resolve the boundary disputes. He has encouraged all for a permanent solution,” Tynsong said.

He further exuded confidence that respective state governments will sit down across the table and work out to arrive at a permanent solution.
