Members of the Hynniewtrep Youths' Council (HYC) demanded ILP implementation and opposed the railway project in Meghalaya

Members of the Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) held a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to discuss the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and express their firm opposition to the proposed railway project in the Khasi and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. The HYC members firmly asserted that no railway line should be allowed to enter the region without the enactment of laws to protect against the potential influx of people from outside.

The delegation also raised the delay in implementing the amended Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) 2020 and recognition of the Khasi-Garo language.

During the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed the HYC members that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma would lead a delegation of Cabinet Ministers to New Delhi during the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament. The purpose of this visit is to meet with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister and seek clarification on the resolution passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly regarding the ILP implementation and the inclusion of the Khasi language in the eighth schedule, as well as the Amendment Bill of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act.

The HYC members reiterated their demand for the implementation of the Amendment Bill of 2020, which they argue encompasses all the provisions of the ILP. They emphasized that the state government must fulfil their two demands: either the implementation of the ILP or the enactment of the Amendment Bill of 2020.

In addition to the meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister, the HYC members also staged a protest in front of the main Secretariat building, urging the government to expedite the implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya.
