The Assam government has constituted a 3-member committee to probe the bursting of JICA water supply pipeline in Guwahati’s Kharghuli area that left at least one woman dead, several others injured and many houses and vehicles damaged.

The committee to be headed by Pabitrram Khaund, Secretary of Housing and Town Planning department has been directed by the state government to submit its report within 3 days.

Besides, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has ordered to halt water supply under the JICA project for the next 15 days. Necessary order in this regard has already been issued by DC Pallav Gopal Jha. This is likely to affect areas like Chandmari, Gandhibasti, Geetanagar and Zoo Road.

The development comes after the government ordered a thorough probe into the incident. As per inputs, the state government has called for a safety audit by IIT experts into the incident. Earlier, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration had said that a magestrial level inquiry into the incident would be conducted.

Panic gripped the Joypur locality in Kharguli on Thursday following the water pipe burst. In fact, water gushed many feet high and spread to a range of at least 500 meters. It is being alleged that the incident took place owing to faulty work carried out by construction company Gammon India and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who is the operating group agency.
