Ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas dies at 72

According to reports, he passed away due to prolonged illness

Veteran singer and Padmashri winner Pankaj Udhas died today. He was 72.

The veteran ghazal maestro breathed his last this morning around 11 am at a private hospital in Mumbai.

He passed away after suffering from prolonged illness.

The death of the music legend was confirmed by his daughter Nayaab Udhas.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Nayaab Udhas wrote, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.”

Singer Sonu Nigam condoled the demise of the music maestro. Taking to Instagram Sonu Nigam wrote, “One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti.”

Several social media users also mourned his death.

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, India, Udhas’ musical journey began at a young age.

He was known for his ghazals like Chitti Ayi Hai and Chandi Jai Rang.

During his early career, Udhas sang for Hindi movies and even experimented with Indian music. However, his true calling lay in the realm of ghazals, a form of Urdu poetry set to music.

His debut ghazal album, “Aahat,” was released in 1980, and it was the start of a highly productive career that would see him release over 60 solo albums and countless collaboration efforts.

In addition to his talent for singing, Udhas was known for his modest and calm personality. The voice of Pankaj Udhas will always hold a special place in the hearts of ghazal fans globally.
