Gandatwisa limping back to normalcy: Dhalai DM

First Published: 16th July, 2024 21:17 IST

After three days of shutdown due to violence after the death of a tribal boy on July 12, shops and businesses opened later in the day today

After the early today morning incident where two shops in Gandatwisa were engulfed in flames, the town is gradually returning to normalcy.

The fire, initially sparked protests from residents who suspected it was an act of arson, similar to an incident four days ago but later police assured that it happened due to an electrical short circuit.

By evening, the situation began to stabilize, thanks to the concerted efforts of the district administration and police.

A significant number of shops reopened after a three-day shutdown, signaling a return to routine life.

District Magistrate of Dhalai, Saju Vaheed, along with the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Avinash Rai, visited the market area.

They interacted with shopkeepers and local residents to reassure them of their safety and support.

Later speaking to reporters, Vaheed confirmed that the market had reopened and that people from surrounding areas were returning, indicating a sense of normalcy.

“Gandatwisa is normal now and the public is happy,” he stated.

However, he also assured that security forces would remain deployed around the clock to maintain order until the situation is deemed completely stable.

The swift response from authorities has been pivotal in calming tensions and restoring daily activities in Gandatwisa, although the community remains cautious following recent events.
