At least four cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadres surrendered at the Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The cadres surrendered in the presence of Assam Director General of Police GP Singh, along with Special DGP Harmeet Singh and other top police officials.
The surrendered cadres were indentified as self-styled captain Nayan Patmout alias Bikram Asom; self-styled lieutenant Dipak Hatibaruah, alias Dibya Asom; Montu Moran and Polash Moran alias Gopal Asom.
Addressing the media at Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati, DGP said that he was hopeful that the four ULFA-I cadres, who returned to the mainstream, will work hand-in-hand with the people of the state for the all-round development of the state.
Sharing details about the cadres, Additional Director General of Police Hiren Nath informed that of the four cadres, two of them have also submitted 2 hand grenades, one Austrian-made pistol, and 25 rounds of live bullets to the police.
ADGP Nath further informed that so far 16 cadres have been arrested in encounter with Para Military forces and the police, while one cadre has been killed.
Meanwhile, when asked regarding the rehabilitation steps undertaken, DGP Singh informed that their primary aim is to make the cadres self-empowered.
Recently, the Assam Government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Police and the Army has undertaken a unique initiative with the sole objective of further bolstering peace and tranquility.
As part of the efforts, families of ULFA cadres are being invited to Army, CAPF camps and Police Stations for trust-building and to help them bring their children back into the mainstream.
What has followed is that, the kin of the misguided youths are now making earnest appeal through social media to ULFA-I Chief Paresh Baruah to send their sons and daughters back home.
Assam DGP GP Singh shared a few clips on micro blogging site X.
An elderly man, Bipin Saikia, father of ULFA cadre Monjit Saikia alias NobojitSaikia in Golaghat is one such man who is still eagerly waiting for his son to return home.
Saikia appealed, “My only request to ULFA-I chief Paresh Barua is that please send my eldest son Monjit Saikia to home. I have not seen him for so long. His mother is also ailing, I am too not in good health. I request Paresh Baruah to send my son back to home.”
