Former Assam governor Lt. Gen Ajai Singh passes away

Lt. Gen. Ajai Singh was appointed as the Governor of Assam in 2013, after he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Four Corps in 1992

Former governor of Assam and Lieutenant General (Retd) Ajai Singh PVSM passed away on April 18 at the age of 88.

Lt. Gen. Ajai Singh was appointed as the Governor of Assam in 2013, after he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Four Corps in 1992.

Singh also served as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

The office of the Chief Minister of Assam, condoling Singh’s demise, wrote, “HCM Dr @ himantabiswa has expressed his deepest condolences on the demise of Lt Gen Ajai Singh PVSM, Former Governor of Assam and veteran of the 1965 & ‘71 wars. HCM recollected Lt. Gen Singh’s illustrious military career and invaluable contribution to the state and nation.”

Born on November 20, 1934, in a farmer’s family in Rajasthan, he studied at Mayo College in Ajmer and Madras University.

After his studies, he joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the Poona Horse. He also witnessed the action in the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971.

He is a recipient of the Indian Military Academy’s (IMA) Sword of Honour and a silver medal.

He has also received the Ati Vishist Seva Medal for Gallantry in 1986 and the Param Vishist Seva Medal for Gallantry in 1992.
