Floods in Mizoram: Villages in Lunglei and Lawngtlai districts inundated

Villages in south Mizoram’s Lunglei and Lawngtlai districts are under water. Incessant rain has flooded several villages in the two districts bordering Bangladesh. So far at least 61 families have been evacuated to safer places in Tlabung sub-town and Chawngte town, sources said on Monday.

They said that Lunglei District officials has undertaken relief works in Tlabung under the supervision of the SDO (Civil), Tlabung.

Reports reaching Aizawl in the afternoon from Tlabung said that 6 houses in nearby Tiperraghat and 4 houses in Nunsury village have also been evacuated to safer places.

Officials said a team of executive members (EMs) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) said that of the 86 villages within the CADC area, 60 villages in the low-lying areas bordering Bangladesh have been partially submerged in the floods due to heavy rains which lashed the state for a number of days in a row.

Reports from CADC said that at least 45 families in Chawngte town have been evacuated to safer places as their homes were being submerged in the rising water of the river Tuichawng.

Sources from Chawngte said that the evacuated families have been lodged in schools and vacant buildings.

 Villages in south Mizoram’s Lunglei and Lawngtlai districts bordering Bangladesh are being fully or party inundated by floods triggered by incessant rains with 16 families evacuated to safer places in Tlabung sub-town, sources said on Monday.

They said that Lunglei District officials has undertaken relief works in Tlabung under the supervision of the SDO (Civil), Tlabung.
