Farmers’s children should go back and help their farmer parents: Meghalaya Min Ampareen Lyngdoh

Stressing on the need to adopt modern technologies of farming, the Minister said that a very old fashioned concept of farming is practiced in the state

Meghalaya Agriculture Minister Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday said that the children of farmers should go back to help their farmer parents so that they are able to cope with the emerging technologies in the farm sector and are able to produce more and earn more.
Stressing on the need to adopt modern technologies of farming, the Minister said that a very old fashioned concept of farming is practiced in the state which needs to change, Agriculture Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Wednesday attending the Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Unlocking Opportunities in Meghalaya.
Stating that though the State Government has already taken various initiatives, the government is ready to understand the requirements of the farmers to sell their produce better.
Minister Lyngdoh also mentioned that many young graduates are now looking at taking farming as a career option. “They themselves are leading entrepreneurs in some of the farm producing groups. They are now aware of world standards in the farm sector and it is now necessary for the educated young entrepreneurs to go back and help their mothers who may or may not be educated”.
Talking about the organic revolution in the state, the agriculture Minister said that as of today 24,000 hecters of land are organic certified as farmers too are now understanding the value of organic farming. The state Government this year adopted the “Meghalaya State Organic and Natural Farming Policy 2023” to turn the hill state into a “national leader” in organic farming.
The workshop held at Shillong was organised with an aim to bring together a group of stakeholders from the agricultural sector, and government officials with a common goal of enhancing agricultural practices and addressing the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Meghalaya.
