The Election Commission of India has asked Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer SB Shashank to appear before the commission seeking explanation on the latest situation over the mass protests demanding his removal.

The Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer will meet officials of the election body in the national capital tomorrow morning.

Talking to newspersons over the protests demanding his ouster, Shashank said that instructions issued to him by the election commission is binding on him.

Besides the CEO also expressed his determination to discharge his duties and responsibilities efficiently for the sake of every citizen who is eligible to exercise his or her franchise.

Earlier, the joint NGO coordination committee had served a November 5 deadline for CEO Shashank to leave the state.

The NGOs are unhappy over the CEO’s dealing with the state bureaucrats and his proposed move to ensure maximum Bru refugees participation in the electoral process.

A massive protest had erupted outside the Raj Bhawan in Mizoram capital Aizawl on Tuesday demanding the removal of Chief Electoral Officer SB Shashank.

The protests were being led by the influential Young Mizo Association and other civil society groups.
