Devastating floods ravage in Arunachal Pradesh: Over 50,000 affected in Changlang

The Meteorological Centre, Itanagar (MCI) has issued a red alert for Changlang, Namsai, Lohit, Lower Dibang Valley, East Siang and Lower Siang districts

Continuous rainfall over the past six days in Arunachal’s Changlang district has turned critical as rising flood waters continue to ravage several villages under Diyun circle.

Following the flood situation, the Assam Rifles launched ‘Operation Saviour’ along with specialized team of army engineers from Changlang and teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

At least 1200 people were rescued. As per inputs, more than 50,000 people have been affected.

As per Namsai water resource division, all the rivers in Namsai and in Wakro circle in Lohit district were flowing above the danger level since Sunday due to continuous downpour.

Thirty-four villages in Namsai and Wakro have so far been affected by flooding.

The affected villages are Wakhettiang, Manyuliang and Pukhuri in Wakro circle in Lohit district, and Kherem, Pankhao, Memey, 7 Kilo, Gunanagar, Chongkham, Alubari, Napotia, Morapat, Nalong, Momong, Tengapani, Jona-IV, Phaneng, Nampong, Philobari, Nigro Charali, Enthem, Mengkeng Miri, Namsai circuit house, Silatoo Kachari, Mahadevpur-I & II, Dharampur, Lekang Gohain, Woisali,Dirakmiri, Rajabeel, Krishnapur, Rangalibeel, Ekorani and Mohaloni in Namsai district.

Meanwhile, incessant rain has triggered landslides at Kamala 1 bridge near Bhalukpong in West Kameng district and disrupted surface communication. However, the workforces have been deployed to restore the traffic.

In East Kameng District, a house was swept away by the surging floodwaters at the Shantipur colony in Seppa. In a viral video, from Seppa, locals can be seen helplessly watching the home as it was carried off in flash floods.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre, Itanagar (MCI) has issued a red alert for Changlang, Namsai, Lohit, Lower Dibang Valley, East Siang and Lower Siang districts as heavy to very heavy rains have been predicted in those districts in the next two days.

Thunderstorms with lightning and extremely heavy rains are likely at isolated places in those districts on Monday, the MCI predicted.

Further, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning are likely to occur in Anjaw, Papum Pare,Tirap, East Kameng, Kurung Kumey, Leparada, Longding, West Kameng, West Siang and other districts on Tuesday.
