Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the eastern-most base of the Indian Air Force in Assam’s Chabua today to oversee IAF’s biggest exercise Gaganshakti 2018, being conducted along the borders with Pakistan and China, in its concluding day.
Gaganshakti, which is the biggest exercise since Operation Brasstacks conducted in 1986, is witnessing the use of around 1500 fighters, helicopters and transport aircraft to practice in a war-like scenario, with the active participation of the army and navy for operations along the northern and western frontiers.
During her visit to the Chabua base, Sitharaman said that this kind of operation is one of a kind and has never happened in the history of Indian Air Force. The exercise is being conducted to test Indian Air Force’s readiness and stamina in war zones. She also congratulated Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanua for the successful conduct of the exercise.
