Assam finds itself in news for the wrong reasons again. A case of moral policing has emerged from the state’s Goalpara district where a couple were harassed and thrashed by a moral police mob.
The incident happened at Pukhuripar under the Rangjuli police station where people gathered and thrashed the couple and even mercilessly assaulted the girl with a cane. All of this happened as the local people and the couple’s families watched in silence.
The incident took place on June 17 and a kangaroo court had even been called at a local school where they were both assaulted by members of the moral policing group.
Shockingly, the moral police group resorted to hooliganism when media persons went to cover the story. The moral police group not only prevented them from covering the story, but also threatened them with dire consequences if the news got out.
