Counting of votes for Assam Panchayat polls is underway across the state. The BJP seems to clearly enjoy an advantage so far with the party clearly heading as per the latest figures are concerned.

As per latest reports, the BJP is leading in 565 gaon panchayat member seats while AGP is ahead in only 89 seats. Opposition congress meanwhile is ahead in 302 gaon panchayat member seats.

It may be mentioned here that the fate of 78,571 candidates is being decided today. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in all counting centres.

The panchayat elections were held for 420 Zila Parishads or District Councils in 26 districts, 2,199 members for the Anchalik Panchayats, 2,199 gaon panchayat presidents and 21,990 gaon panchayat members.

Earlier, re-polling was held in several polling centres following stray incidents and anomalies.

The rural body polls assume significance since it is seen as a Litmus Test for the BJP, AGP, the Opposition Congress besides other political parties ahead of the impending 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
