Cong in Manipur demands repoll in 17 polling stations of Ukhrul

Congress alleged that booths were captured, there was forced voting and EVMs were destroyed by unknown armed men in 17 polling stations

The Congress party has demanded repoll in as many as 17 polling stations in Manipur’s Ukhrul (under the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat) alleging booth capture, rigging of polls and forced voting by unknown armed miscreants.

In a statement, the Congress alleged that EVMs at polling stations number 36, 41 and 50 were destroyed by unknown armed miscreants.

The Party also claimed that 14 other polling stations – 1, 2, 3, 15, 16, 17, 32, 33, 34, 35, 45, 46, 48 and 49 were booth captured, rigged and force voted.

Earlier, reports of altercation between NPF and Congress supporters came in from Ukhrul.

Reportedly, a few EVMs were also destroyed in the incident. The situation was soon brought under control. The incident took place at polling station no 41.

In another incident at polling station number 50 at Khararphung and Luiyainao Tang an EVM and one CCTV camera was reportedly destroyed.

Polling was held for 13 assembly segments of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat. Yesterday’s voting completed the polling for the Outer Manipur seat.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats – Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur. Voting for the Inner Manipur seat was held on April 19, phase I of the Lok Sabha elections. Voting for the 15 of the 32 assembly segments of Outer Manipur was held on April 19.

Four candidates are in the fray – NPF’s Kachui Timothy Zimik. He is backed by the BJP, Congress’s Alfred K Arthur and two independent candidates – S Kho John and Alyson Abonmei.
