China To Build World's Largest Hydropower Dam In Tibet
In what is certain to ring alarm bells in the Northeast, especially Assam and Arunachal, China has approved the construction of what will be the world’s largest hydropower dam, kicking off an ambitious project on the eastern rim of the Tibetan plateau that could affect millions downstream in India and Bangladesh. Estimated to cost $137 billion, the mega infrastructure on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet near the Indian border has raised serious concerns in downstream countries over potential impacts on water flow and regional stability. According to state-run Xinhua news agency, the Chinese government has sanctioned the development of a hydropower facility on Yarlung Zangbo.
