Amidst uproar across Assam over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called for a crucial cabinet meeting where the vexed issue is likely to be taken up.

Notably, the government is facing the heat from within the BJP as two of its MLA Atul Bora and Binod Hazarika had openly voiced their opposition to the Bill. Apart from this the Asom Gana Parishad which is a coalition partner of the BJP in Assam is also vehemently opposing the Bill.

The AGP has also threatened to snap off ties with the BJP if the Centre goes ahead with the Bill that provides for granting citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan facing alleged religious persecution.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal government will also get into deliberations with the All Assam Students Union and 28 ethnic organisations of the state today to discuss some important matters pertaining to the current situation in the state.

The meeting which will be chaired by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is likely to discuss the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which has triggered widespread controversy and led to strong opposition against the BJP-led government in the state, and update of the NRC the final draft of which will be published by June 30.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, on Wednesday had a three-hour long meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on the Citizenship Amendment Bill and NRC update.
