The initiative is expected to directly benefit grassroots farmers through increased support and resources.
Sikkim’s Chief Minister, PS Tamang, recently chaired a crucial meeting with the Department of Science and Technology, focusing on two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the state’s resilience and economic stability. The initiatives discussed were the revival of large cardamom cultivation and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) mitigation, both framed within a mission-mode approach.
During the meeting, CM Tamang emphasized innovative strategies to boost large cardamom production, aiming to enhance the livelihoods of farmers and strengthen the economic security of rural communities. The initiative is expected to directly benefit grassroots farmers through increased support and resources.
On the issue of GLOF mitigation, a comprehensive plan was presented to protect lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems from the threats posed by glacial floods. This initiative underscores Sikkim’s commitment to addressing climate-induced disasters and ensuring the long-term safety of its residents. The plan includes the adoption of advanced technologies, such as remote sensing for early warning systems, and encourages local community involvement.
To ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives, CM Tamang has instructed the department to maintain a focused approach and deliver exceptional results. He also announced plans for a personal visit to vulnerable areas later this year, aiming to assess conditions on the ground and refine strategies for successful execution.
These efforts reflect Sikkim’s proactive stance in confronting environmental challenges and enhancing the livelihoods of its people.
