Guwahati achieved the distinction of registering not even a single accident on New Year’s Eve. The development comes after Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma embarked on a relentless campaign against incidents of drunk driving.

Along with enforcing measures like breathalyser tests across the state he had also urged the revellers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol after partaking in new year’s festivities. He also issued strict instructions to all the district administrations to check incidents of drunken driving in their respective areas.

As per reports between December 31, 2020, and January 1, 2021, there were as many as 69 accidents in the state in which 29 people had lost their lives. During the last year 6,800 accidents had taken place, in which over 2,800 people lost their lives.

Chief Minister Sarma himself had taken to the streets of Guwahati to accompany police personnel and officials of transport department in the drive against drunk driving.

CM Sarma had visited Guwahati Club, Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Chandmari, Zoo road and Ganeshguri to review the drive initiated by the government to prevent accident cases on December 31.

And now netizens are lauding the efforts of Chief Minister Sarma’s actions to boost the morale of police and transport department personnel who were on duty to curb violations.

Taking to Twitter, several users appreciated his efforts with #ThanksHimantaMama now trending in the social media platform.
