Centre’s Rs 11,000 cr relief package for flood-hit Sikkim and Assam

Union Minister for Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday announced that the Centre has allocated Rs 11,000 crore for flood relief in Assam and Sikkim.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Scindia said, “The central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to work for the development of the Northeast region and so far lots of development has been done in the region in the past 10 years.”
“Rs 11,000 crore has been allocated for the two flood-hit Northeastern states under the aegis of the Union Budget that was recently tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman,” he added.
Scindia pointed out that the Ministry of DONER’s budget had surged from Rs 1,750 crore during the Congress era to Rs 6,000 crore under the current administration.
He also criticized the previous Congress government for neglecting the Northeast, contrasting it with the numerous developmental projects initiated by the Modi government over the past decade.
Meanwhile, Assam’s flood situation improved on Saturday with the water level of the major rivers receding and the number of people affected by the deluge declining to 44,434 in five districts, an official bulletin said.
The districts currently affected include Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Golaghat and Dhemaji.
There was no loss of human lives reported during the day with the death toll due to floods, landslides, storms and lightnings remaining at 114, the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
