China’s Mega Dam Will Dry Up Brahmaputra: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced serious concerns regarding the potential ecological and environmental impacts of China’s proposed dam on the Brahmaputra River.
Speaking at Meet the Editos on the New Year, Sarma highlighted the possible disruption to the river’s delicate ecosystem and its water availability, both of which are crucial for millions of people in Northeast India.
“The Government of India is aware of the situation and has communicated its concerns to China. I believe this will be addressed in the ongoing India-China dialogue,” said Sarma, expressing cautious optimism that diplomatic channels will help mitigate the risks.
Sarma emphasized the potential threat posed by the dam, which could destabilize the river’s flow, making it heavily reliant on rainfall in upstream areas like Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. “If there is insufficient rainfall, the Brahmaputra could dry up entirely and only depend on rainwater of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan,” he warned, underlining the critical nature of the river to the region’s agriculture, water supply, and overall ecosystem.
His remarks highlight the broader environmental and geopolitical challenges of managing transboundary rivers and the need for cooperative regional solutions.
