Calcutta High Court Judge Indra Prasanna Mukerji officially assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court in a ceremony held today.

He was administered the oath of office by Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayashankar at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan.

Justice Mukerji, elevated to the bench on May 18, 2009, was appointed Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court by the Ministry of Law and Justice, following a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium.

The Swearing-in ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including cabinet ministers Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh and Cominone Ymbong, along with Opposition leader Dr Mukul Sangma, and other officials and advocates.

Earlier on July 10, the Supreme Court collegium had proposed Justice Rabstan from Ladakh for the position. However, it has now been decided to appoint him as Chief Justice of his parent Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

After two months, in a subsequent recommendation, the collegium has proposed Calcutta High Court Judge Indra Prasanna Mukerji as the new Chief Justice for the Meghalaya High Court.

According to legal sources, the delay and change of the earlier decision was that the Centre had expressed reservations about the recommendation of three Judges as Chief Justices of various High Courts elsewhere in the country.
