Meghalaya government is in touch with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to unveil the bust and also a memorial of the legendary Khasi freedom fighter

A bust and a memorial of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the legendary Khasi freedom fighter of Meghalaya, is expected to be unveiled in Dhaka next month, Meghalaya Minister for Art and Culture, Paul Lyngdoh said on Wednesday in Shillong.

The Minister said that the Meghalaya government is in touch with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

A life-size statue of the freedom fighter will also come up at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Dhaka.

“It will be the best honour because it will be for the first time that U Tirot Sing will cross the territorial limits of India and become a global figure,” Minister Lyngdoh said.

U Tirot Sing, a tribal chief known as ‘the Hero of the Khasi Hills’, declared war against the British for their attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills and led an attack on the colonial forces on April 8, 1829.

He was captured four years later after the Anglo-Khasi War and died in the Dhaka Central Jail on July 17, 1835. The day is commemorated as U Tirot Singh Day in Meghalaya.

As per the Meghalaya government’s plans, a library too would be built in Dhaka and named after the warrior who rebelled against the British.
