In a major boost for the Northeast region, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget 2025-26 speech, announced a series of key initiatives aimed at accelerating development and improving connectivity. One of the standout announcements was the establishment of a new urea plant in Assam with a production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tons per year.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to improving air connectivity in the Northeast, Sitharaman noted the success of the UDAN scheme, which has so far connected 88 airports and facilitated air travel for 1.5 crore middle-class passengers. She further announced that a modified version of UDAN will be launched to cover 120 new destinations, including helipads and smaller airports in hilly and aspirational districts across the Northeast region.

The Finance Minister also higlighted the government’s focus on enhancing nutritional support for vulnerable populations in the region. She revealed that cost norms for nutritional support programmes, including Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, will be revised to ensure better implementation. These programmes provide essential nutritional support to over 8 crore children, 1 crore pregnant and lactating women, and 20 lakh adolescent girls, particularly in aspirational districts and the Northeast.
