Major political development seems to be on cards in Sikkim with the Bharatiya Janata Party top brass convening a meeting with state Chief Minister PS Tamang and other ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) leaders.
Significantly, the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leader and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was also set to attend the meeting, but he backed out at the last moment triggering speculations on his next move.
As per sources, BJP has convened a meeting to discuss and finalise seat sharing for October 21 by-polls. In Sikkim, BJP suddenly became the main opposition party after 10 SDF MLAs switched sides and joined the saffron party few weeks ago.
However, BJP is keen on opening its account in Sikkim by actually winning seats this time in the ensuing by-polls. The party did not win a single seat in the last assembly polls.
The political situation is peculiar because both the SKM and the SDF are close to the NDA. In this backdrop, the role of the SDF chief Pawan Chamling is left to be seen particularly because he has skipped the meeting with the BJP top brass in New Delhi.
