In a major breakthrough, the security forces have apprehended as many as nine cadres of the Myanmar-based Yung Aung faction of the NSCN-K, including self-styled Major General Yangong Mope.

According to Assam Rifles sources, 4 of the nine cadres were involved in the May 25th ambush in Nagaland’s Ukha-Tobu villages that claimed the lives of two jawans. The development comes at a time when NSCN cadres on the Indian side of the border are in peace talks with the Centre.

Incidentally, Yangang was also the Guard Commander of Khango Konyak before his impeachment and is said to be associated with the outfit for more than 15 years. Some weapons and currency notes of India and Myanmar were also recovered from their possession.

The Assam Rifles has been on the hunt to nab Yangang right since the ambush took place. While six cadres of the Yung Aung group were apprehended on June 19, Yangong and two others were nabbed on Friday.

According to security sources, Yangang Mopa has a very strong hold in Eastern Nagaland and has been the kingpin of extortion in all 4 districts of Eastern Nagaland. He is also the prime suspect in June 17, 2018 ambush in Aboi area.

On May 25, two jawans of the Assam Rifles were killed after suspected NSCN(K) militants fired at a convoy of the security forces indiscriminately in Mon district, between Tobu and Ukha villages.

The troops were on a regular patrolling duty when the attack took place. The militants first triggered an IED following which they opened indiscriminate fire. The martyred jawans were identified as Naib Subedar Dina Nath Ram and Rifleman GD Kalidas Sharma.
