Assam’s Charaideo Moidam to soon become a World Heritage Site

Assam has achieved another landmark as the Charaideo Moidam has met all requirements of UNESCO to be recognized as a World Heritage site.

The nomination will be reviewed by the International Council of Monument Sites (ICOMOS) after all the technical requirements of the UNESCO secretariat are fulfilled.

Charaideo Moidam has been ranked among the 52 sites on the tentative list of World Heritage Sites in India.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “With great pride, happy to share a landmark achievement in our endeavour to get World Heritage Site status for Charaideo Maidams. The maidams have met all technical requirements of the UNESCO Secretariat. My gratitude once again to Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji for the nomination.

Charaideo Moidam is commonly known as sacred burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty.

There were more than 150 Moidams, but currently only 30 Maidams are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and Assam State Archaeology Department, and the remaining Maidams are unprotected.
Charaideo was the original kingdom of the Ahom’s built by Chaolung Sukhapa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in 1253 CE.
