In a big setback for the ULFA-I, top leader of the banned outfit and Commander for Western Command, Dwipen Saud was killed during an encounter in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Thursday.

A fierce gun-battle broke out between the police and the ULFA-I rebels at Besimari in Bongaigaon district early morning today.

Dwipen Saud had recently replaced former ULFA-I Deputy Commander-in-Chief Drishti Rajkhowa as the Commander of the outfit’s Western Command.

Meanwhile, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta informed, Self Styled Col Dwipen Saud was taken to the hospital with bullet wound. He further informed that Saud’s gunman Padum Rai was also apprehended alive with a weapon.

Moreover, weapons and grenades were also recovered from them and further search is on.

The DGP further informed that Assam Police had received inputs about the ULFA-Independent’s plans for a series of kidnappings.

The Assam top cop said that the rebel group by joining hands with other anti-national forces including those from Bangladesh had already hatched conspiracies for high profile abductions.

It may be mentioned that the ULFA-Independent has of late stepped up its activities in Assam and areas of Arunachal bordering Myanmar especially with the kidnapping of Oil company personnel.
