The mega infrastructure and investment summit being held in Guwahati on Feb 25th and 26th is also likely to witness announcements to the tune of Rs 50, 000 crore worth of investment projects by the union government.

The scale of the event can be gauged by the fact that external affairs minister S Jaishankar is himself going to lead the delegation of the foreign heads of mission in New Delhi and their spouses to the event. Partner countries like Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Thailand, besides Bhutan, will bring in high-level delegations to the summit that will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25th.

Modi will attend the inaugural session, where key announcements related to investments in Assam will be made. Jaishankar, as the head of the Indian delegation, will also address the gathering and participate in crucial discussions on global cooperation and business opportunities in Assam.

Business and Industry Leaders Attend

The summit is set to attract some of India’s most influential business magnates. Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, Anil Agarwal, Sajjan Jindal, and Prashant Ruia are expected to announce significant investments in Assam, underscoring the region’s growing potential as a business destination. These top industrialists are likely to focus on key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, semiconductors, and manufacturing, helping to create jobs and economic growth in the state.

Focus on Semiconductors, Infrastructure, and Natural Resources

The summit will feature thematic sessions on high-growth sectors such as semiconductors, hydrocarbons, and bamboo. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, will highlight the potential of Assam as a semiconductor manufacturing hub.

Additionally, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, will discuss investments in infrastructure and transportation.

The government of Assam is also committed to promoting its rich natural resources, such as bamboo, NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Limited), and hydrocarbons, as part of its larger economic development strategy.

Bhutan’s Participation and Strong Regional Cooperation

A notable feature of the summit is the participation of a Bhutanese delegation, which will be led by Bhutan’s Agriculture Minister. With India-Bhutan cooperation being a central theme of the event, this collaboration is expected to open up new avenues for trade and investment in areas like agriculture, hydropower, and tourism. The 12-member Bhutanese delegation adds a strong regional dimension to the summit, emphasizing the growing economic ties between the two nations.

Focus on Assam’s MSMEs and Skill Development

Alongside discussions on large-scale investments, the summit will focus on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Assam. Over 12,000 requests for Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have already been received from local industries, signalling a surge in business interest. Additionally, there is a significant focus on skill development to ensure that the workforce in Assam is equipped to take on the challenges of a rapidly changing economy.

Public Engagement and Exhibition

The Advantage Assam 2.0 exhibition will open its doors to the public from February 27th to March 1st, offering a unique opportunity for people to engage with the state’s diverse industries. The exhibition will feature Assam’s key products such as Assam tea, bamboo, lemons, and pineapples, alongside educational sessions on tourism, bioenergy, and the future of Assam’s economy.
