Assam: Second Body of Trapped Miner Found after 5 Days

As the rescue operation entered its sixth day, one more body has been recovered from the flooded mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, Assam, on Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Lijen Magar, a resident of village number 1 of Kalamati in Dima Hasao.

As per inputs, Magar was the youngest among the trapped miners. Lijen Magar is survived by his wife and a 2-month-old baby.

The body was recovered at 7:36 am this morning by a joint team of the Army and the NDRF.

After this fresh recovery of the second body, 7 other miners still remain trapped inside the mine.

“We check the water level every morning. And when we were doing that, we saw a body floating. So we took it out at around 7:30 am. The water level has been reduced by 6 metres. 5 pumps were working overnight.The operation is going on 24 hours.” Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, Team Commander, NDRF said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said that the body was yet to be identified.

”Rescue efforts in Umrangsu continue with unwavering resolve. Tragically, another body was recovered this morning, with the identity yet to be confirmed,” the chief minister posted on the microblogging site.
”Our hearts go out to the grieving, as we hold on to hope and strength in this difficult time,” he added.
Earlier, on January 8, Army divers from the 21 Para Special Forces had recovered one body from the flooded coal mine. The individual was identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestho, a resident of Udayapur district, Nepal.

On Thursday night, the leader of the trapped workers was arrested, even as rescuers from Navy and Army made little headway on the operation’s fifth day. The sardar (leader), Hanan Laskar, had fled the site soon after. Earlier on Tuesday, Punish Nunisa, the quarry’s lease-holder, was arrested.
