The Assam Satra Mahasabha has today clarified its stand on the issue of supporting grant of Citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis. The Sabha stated that it is against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which if passed will pave way for the persecuted Hindus, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan eligible for citizenship in India.
The Sabha clearly stated that anyone who entered the State after March 25, 1971 needs to be deported. The Sabha also said that the comment made by its General Secretary Kusum Mahanta that the Sabha supports granting of citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis is something that the Sabha does not endorse.
Meanwhile, the Sabha has suspended its Vice President Akhil Mahanta and General Secretary Kusum Mahanta today following a heated arguement between the members of the Sabha at a time when a meeting was taking place. Following which the members of the Guwahati Satra Sabha stormed out of the meeting room, accusing Kusum Mahanta and labelling him as a political agent and traitor of the Assamese society.
The Guwahati Satra Sabha further demanded Kusum Mahanta’s resignation.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee has been constituted to look into the entire episode. The committee will comprise of Former president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora; Executive Member of Mahasabha, Gunin Mahanta and President of Guwahati Satra Sabha, Dulal Chandra Goswami.
