Sub-inspector, Suruzul Haque, was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 in lieu of giving relief to a person in an old pending case

In a successful crackdown of the Assam government against corruption, a sub-inspector of Assam Police posted at Nagaon police station was caught red-handed accepting bribe by the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam on Wednesday.

A team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption launched an operation on Wednesday evening and successfully apprehended Suruzul Haque for accepting bribe money of Rs 15,000 from a complainant in lieu of giving him relief in an old pending case.

The sub-inspector has been brought to Guwahati for further investigation.

Earlier, two government employees were caught red-handed for accepting bribes by the team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam.

The arrested government employees were identified as Kanak Chandra Baruah, Lat Mandal, Office of the Revenue Circle Officer, Kalaigaon in Udalguri district, and Dilip Borah, Gaonburah (village headman).

Recently, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a significant initiative to keep corruption at bay, appealed to all circle officers to keep portraits of their parents on their desks. This, the Assam Chief Minister believes, will prevent officers from indulging in corrupt practises and help them stay honest and committed to their work.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that a total of 50 government employees were caught on corruption charges in 2022, with a total captured amount of Rs 11.2 million.
