In a major breakthrough, the Assam Police on Thursday seized heroin worth over Rs 4.5 crore at Jorabat on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Acting on a tip-off, the Assam Police seized the contraband from a truck coming from Manipur. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
A total of 60 packets containing heroin weighing around 660 grams packed in plastic soap cases were recovered.
Two persons, hailing from Manipur, have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa lauded the Assam Police for its success and said that the war against drugs would continue till the menace is completely wiped off.
“#AssamAgainstDrugs Kudos @assampolice as you continue to tighten the noose around drugs mafia. This morning, Police intercepted an interstate consignment of drugs at Jorabat and seized 660 gms Heroin worth over Rs 4.5 cr in international market & arrest 2 so far. Good,” CM Sarma tweeted.
Promising to intensify the crusade against the trade in illegal drugs, the Chief Minister said that drugs are mostly smuggled from Myanmar making Assam a transit route.
Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio, said his government will maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards the illegal drugs trade as hundreds of youths are being led astray in Assam with the abuse of various drugs.
