With eyes on the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Region polls, more than 700 leaders and members of the United Bodo People Organization from 23 constituencies outside the BTR region among others joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Guwahati on Friday.

The recent announcement of the Assam government to have Bodo as an official associate language has brought in a positive tide in favor of the BJP for the BTR elections after their alliance with the Bodoland People’s Front ran into rough waters.

The new joinees were inducted into the party in presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP chief Ranjit Dass at a function held at the Srimanta Sankardeb Kalakshetra.

Welcoming the new inductees into the BJP, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that they had chosen the path of nation-building and this will secure a future for Assam.

Meanwhile, State health minister and NEDA Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the efforts of the BJP-led government to preserve the culture, identity and tradition of the different ethnic groups of the state.

He also stressed on the success of signing the Bodo Peace Accord which has opened the doors of peace in the region. Talking on the matter, Sarma said that the signing of the Accord proves that the Bodo people have vouched for a geographically unified Assam.

Sarma also mentioned about the new features of the BTR Accord which gives the people the flexibility to stay within the BTR or opt to stay out of it.

The BJP is looking to make a dent in BTR politics with council polls set to take place in December this year.
