A crucial Chief Minister level meet of Assam-Meghalaya on the inter-state border issue took place in Guwahati on January 29th.  The meeting ended around 5.30 pm in Guwahati. The meet came at a time both sides are looking for 100% agreement on the 6 areas of difference taken up in the first phase.

Briefing the press after the meet, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika informed that a spot inspection of Khanapara area of Guwahati along the interstate border was conducted by ministers of both the state yesterday.  He also added that the centre will take a final call on the demarcation after going through the reports.

It may be mentioned that both CMs have met Union Home Minister Amit Shah once to discuss the reports of the regional committees and are expected to fly to Delhi soon for final approval.

As per inputs, agreement has been reached on 98% areas of difference however, disagreement remains over a small area in two locations.
Today’s meet assumed significance as agreement in the remaining 2% area is expected after due deliberations.
Both Assam and Meghalaya governments have held all-party meets on the border issue besides briefing pressure groups and civil society bodies on the development.
