Assam: Manipuri Is Now Associate Official Language In 4 Districts

CM Sarma, said that the recruitment exams of the Assam government will now include the option of choosing Manipuri language which will come as a blessing to Manipur youth.

The Assam Assembly on Thursday passed the Assam Official Language Amendment Bill 2024, making Manipuri the associate official language in three districts of Barak Valley—Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj along with Hojai.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking on the fourth day of the autumn session of Assam Assembly, said that the decision to make Manipuri language as an associate official language in four districts of Assam will greatly benefit the people speaking the language.

Speaking on the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, Chief Minister Sarma, said that the recruitment exams of the Assam government will now include the option of choosing Manipuri language which will come as a blessing to Manipur youth.

He also added that there has been a longstanding demand to include Manipuri Language as an associate official language which has been fulfilled by the incumbent government after 77 years of independence.

Taking to X, CM Sarma said, “Our Govt is committed to preserving and promoting all indigenous languages and we have taken several steps in this direction including notifying a few languages as medium of instruction in schools. We will keep working in this direction to promote other languages as well.”

The Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was tabled on August 22. The Bill seeks to amend the Assam Official Languages Act, 1960 by inserting a new Section 5B.
