The Assam government has sought a report from the state NRC coordinator on the status of an estimated 3.8 lakh people who had not filed claims for inclusion of their names in the final NRC despite their names not figuring in the draft list.
Once the NRC authorities send a reply with details, the Assam government will ask the state border police to initiate action on this group of people in accordance with the Foreigners Act. Their case may then appear before the Foreigners Tribunals.
The names of 40 lakh people did not figure in the final NRC draft. More than 36 lakh have filed claims for the inclusion of their names in the NRC.
